Why Should You Outsource Game Development?

watch 6 months

Developing a game can be an exciting yet challenging process. It involves everything from creating art and animations to coding and testing, all while keeping the end-user experience in mind. And with the fast-growing gaming industry, companies need to keep up. So, should you try to do it all in-house, or is it better to outsource the work to a game development studio?

In recent years, more businesses have been opting to outsource game development. Partnering with a specialized game development company does offer many benefits, from accessing top talent to saving time and money. But why game outsourcing? Let’s break it down.

Making Life Easier for Your Team

Game development outsourcing is when a company partners with an external studio to handle parts, or all, of the game creation process. Think of it as an extension of your own team! Instead of trying to do everything in-house, you collaborate with skilled professionals who specialize in areas like coding, design, art, or testing.

This way, you can scale your team up or down as needed, without the long-term commitment of hiring full-time staff. Working with a game outsourcing studio means you get the extra help you need, while still keeping control of your project and vision. It’s like adding more hands to your project, giving you flexibility and access to expert talent.

Why Do Companies Start Outsourcing Game Developers?

Now, let’s talk about why outsourcing has become an increasingly attractive option for the gaming industry.

Access to Top Global Talent

One of the biggest perks of outsourcing game development is that you can work with talented people from all over the world. When you collaborate with a game outsourcing studio, you tap into a wide pool of artists, designers, developers, and other experts who have tons of experience. Whether you are building a mobile game or a console title, these professionals have seen it all and know how to get the job done.

At Devoted Studios, we work with creative professionals from different backgrounds and specialties, which means we can bring unique ideas and solutions to your game. Instead of being limited by the skills of your in-house team, outsourcing lets you access a broader range of expertise.

Cost Savings

Building and maintaining a full-time game development team can be expensive. especially when building an in-house team. You’re not only paying for salaries but also for benefits, office space, equipment, and ongoing training. These costs add up fast!

However, by outsourcing to a game development studio, you can manage your budget much more effectively. You only pay for the services you need, when you need them. This flexibility ensures you don’t overspend on resources that may not be required at every stage of development, making it a more cost-efficient option for many companies. Below is a table of how much it costs to build a game.

Below is an estimation of how much it costs to build a game.

S. No. Type of Mobile Game Development Cost
1 Mini-Game $2,000 to $10,000
2 Simple 2D Game $10,000 to $20,000
3 Social Game App $18,000 to $30,000
4 Mid Level Mobile Game $10,000 to $50,000
5 Business Mobile Game $5,000 to $1,00,000
6 3D Game $30,000 to $60,000
7 AAA Game $300,000 to $500,000
8 Real Money Game $10,000 to $100,000

Source: appstudio.ca

Outsourcing your game development is a smart way to keep these costs under control, no matter the type of game you’re building. By partnering with a game outsourcing studio, you can access global talent without the high overhead of maintaining an in-house team. Need a simple mini-game for $2,000? Outsourcing can connect you with the right developers quickly and efficiently. Developing a more complex 3D or AAA game? Outsourcing gives you the flexibility to scale your team without long-term commitments, allowing you to adjust based on your project’s needs.

Scalability and Flexibility

Every game is different, and each project comes with its own set of challenges. Some games require large teams, while others might only need a small group of developers. When you work with a game outsourcing studio, you get the flexibility to scale your team up or down based on the needs of the project.

Let’s say you are building a game for a major console launch. You might need a large team to work on complex elements like animation, level design, or multiplayer features. An outsource video game development studio can quickly gather a team of experts who know how to handle large-scale projects. On the other hand, if you are just developing a simple mobile game, you might only need a small group of developers.

Outsourcing game development gives you the freedom to adjust your team size without the long-term commitments that come with hiring in-house employees.

Faster Time to Market

In the gaming world, timing is everything. Whether you are creating a mobile game or a large console project, getting your game to market quickly can make all the difference. By working with an experienced game development studio like Devoted Studios, you can speed up your development process.

Outsourcing means you can bring in extra hands whenever you need them, which helps prevent bottlenecks and keeps your project on track. If you try to do everything in-house, you might find that you need to hire more people or wait for your current team to complete other projects before they can work on your game. That slows everything down. But when you outsource mobile game development, you can have multiple teams working at once, which gets your game out the door faster.

Focus on What You Do Best

Developing a game requires a lot of focus and time. If your team is tied up with coding, art creation, and testing, they might not have the bandwidth to work on other important areas of your business. By outsourcing to a game development company, you free up your internal team to focus on what they do best, whether that’s marketing, business development, or managing other key projects.

For example, if you specialize in mobile app development, it might make more sense to hire a game outsourcing studio to handle the game development side of things. That way, you can focus on growing your mobile apps while letting the experts create your game.

Mitigated Risks

When you outsource game development, one of the key benefits is mitigated risks. Game development is a complex process that comes with many potential challenges, like budget overruns, missed deadlines, or technical issues. By partnering with a game outsourcing studio, you reduce these risks because you’re working with experts who have the experience and processes in place to handle such challenges.

Outsourcing teams are skilled at managing unexpected hurdles, such as staffing changes or technical bugs, without affecting the overall project timeline. They typically use proven workflows and risk management strategies to ensure that problems are identified early and addressed quickly. This reduces the likelihood of costly mistakes and helps keep your game on track.

Ready to Outsource Your Game?

Outsourcing your game development can be a game-changer, but how do you know if you’re ready? First, consider what parts of the project you need help with—whether it’s coding, art, animation, or the entire game. Make sure you have a clear vision and scope for your game. Once you know the skills and resources you need, it’s time to start looking for the right game development studio. You will want to partner with a team that understands your goals and can deliver on time and within budget.

Ready to get started? Let Devoted Studios turn your game idea into reality, faster and more efficiently!

Can You Make AAA Games with Unity?

watch 6 months

When we think of AAA games, titles like The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption 2, or The Witcher 3 often come to mind. These are massive productions with incredibly detailed graphics, complex mechanics, and long, incredible narrative.

But can Unity, a game engine historically associated with mobile games and indie developers, handle AAA game development? The answer might surprise you.

What Defines a AAA Game?

Before exploring Unity’s potential for AAA game development, let’s clarify what a AAA game actually is. The term ‘AAA game’ typically refers to titles created by large studios with extensive budgets, big teams, and high production values. These games are considered flagship products for companies, often taking years to complete and requiring millions of dollars. In short, AAA games represent the best that the industry has to offer in terms of visual quality, gameplay, and storytelling.

The cost of AAA game development, according to the CMA report, can go up to $1 billion, depending on the game’s complexity. Take for example, Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, they required over $250 million in development costs.

Why are AAA games so expensive to make? The simple answer is because these projects involve multiple teams working across various areas such as art design, coding, voice acting, and marketing.

Unity Game Development: A Brief Overview

Unity is one of the most widely used game development engines globally, known for its flexibility, ease of use, and strong community support. Developers use it to build everything from simple 2D mobile games to complex 3D environments and VR experiences. Over the years, Unity game development has advanced significantly, with the engine becoming increasingly capable of handling more sophisticated projects.

Unity offers an intuitive interface and a vast library of assets, which makes it popular among small studios and indie developers. Its cross-platform compatibility and relatively accessible pricing model make it a go-to for developers of all sizes.

However, when it comes to AAA game development, Unity isn’t always the first engine that comes to mind. But that does not mean it can’t. Unity is fully capable of developing AAA-quality games. Games like The Heretic and Cities: Skylines are examples of AAA games made with Unity.

Unity’s Growing Capability for AAA Games

While Unity originally catered to smaller projects, its capabilities have expanded significantly. The most recent versions of Unity offer tools like the High-Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) and real-time ray tracing, which allow for lifelike lighting, shadows, and detailed environments. These features have brought Unity much closer to the visual quality often associated with AAA games.

For instance, Unity’s HDRP allows for advanced rendering techniques, making it easier to produce visually stunning games. Additionally, Unity’s Visual Effect Graph gives developers the ability to create complex particle systems, contributing to the immersive experiences typically found in AAA titles. Unity’s Data-Oriented Technology Stack (DOTS) also allows for more efficient game performance, which is crucial for large, complex games.

Another major advantage for Unity developers is its Asset Store, which provides pre-made models, textures, animations, and other resources that can drastically speed up game development.

Top 3 AAA Games Built with Unity Engine

While Unity is not yet the industry standard for AAA games, there have been several notable titles that highlight the engine’s capabilities. These examples demonstrate that Unity is more than capable of handling complex game mechanics, stunning visuals, and immersive gameplay experiences typically expected from AAA games. Here are some examples of AAA games built with Unity engine:

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, released in August 2020, is a colorful, battle royale game built with Unity, where players compete in fun, chaotic obstacle courses. Developers used Unity’s built-in physics engine to create dynamic and unpredictable interactions between the jellybean-like characters as they navigate these wacky challenges.

Unity’s asset store was essential for sourcing 3D models, animations, and other elements, saving time and resources during development. The game’s real-time physics and seamless multiplayer functionality were made possible by Unity, allowing for smooth gameplay and a fun, engaging experience. Unity helped deliver the charm and unpredictability that makes Fall Guys so beloved.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is not only visually stunning, but it also delivers highly engaging and challenging gameplay. As a 2D platformer with ‘Metroidvania’ elements, the game offers tight, responsive controls that allow players to execute precise movements, which are critical for navigating its beautifully designed environments. Unity’s capabilities shine through in the fluidity of Ori’s movements, from double jumps and dashes to gliding through the air with a graceful fluidity that feels natural and responsive.

The gameplay centers around exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving. Players control Ori, a small spirit creature, as they traverse a sprawling interconnected world filled with hidden paths, dangerous enemies, and cleverly designed puzzles. The game encourages players to revisit areas with new abilities, making exploration feel rewarding.

Subway Surfers

Who doesn’t know Subway Surfers? It’s one of the most popular and addictive endless runner games developed by KiLoo and SYBO, and believe it or not, it’s made with Unity! The game’s vibrant graphics, smooth controls, and fast-paced action are all powered by Unity’s flexible game engine, which makes the gameplay experience feel seamless.

In Subway Surfers, players take on the role of a character running through subway tracks, trying to outrun the inspector and his dog. With simple swipe controls, they dodge oncoming trains, jump over barriers, and collect coins along the way. Power-ups like jetpacks and coin magnets add to the fun, making each run feel fresh and exciting.

The Future of Unity in AAA Game Development

Unity is gradually becoming a viable option for AAA developers. The constant updates to the engine and the introduction of advanced tools like HDRP and DOTS make it more competitive with other AAA game engines. Unity also offers greater flexibility and faster iteration times, making it appealing to game studios looking to innovate in their development process.

As more studios explore Unity’s potential, it is likely that we will see more AAA games developed with Unity in the coming years.

So, can you make AAA games with Unity?

Absolutely, though it requires some additional effort and know-how. Unity has proven itself as a powerful tool capable of producing complex, visually stunning games. However, making a AAA game with Unity may require more customization and optimization compared to other engines.

Unity’s recent advancements have positioned it as a strong contender for large-scale projects, and as more developers look for ways to streamline the development process, Unity offers an attractive combination of flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency.

Meet Igor Kovalov, The Visionary Behind Devoted Studios X Nike’s Airphoria in Fortnite

watch 6 months

What started as a shooter game has blossomed into a sprawling service-based universe where creativity knows no bounds!

Meet,  Igor Kovalov, contracted as Art Director at Devoted Studios, discusses the unique collaboration between Nike and Fortnite through the Airphoria project. Kovalov shares that Fortnite continually evolves, offering fresh content to keep players coming back for more. Think of it as a playground where anything is possible.

Igor spills the beans on the exciting collaboration between Nike and Fortnite through the vibrant Airphoria project.

Project Challenges and Workflow

Igor describes working on Airphoria as a big challenge but also exciting. The team kicked things off by building prototypes and testing different levels to make sure the game was fun for everyone, from casual players to those who play a lot. They also focused on designing 3D assets and lighting, using early concepts to shape the game’s look and feel.

Art Direction Role

Igor made sure that everything in the game met Nike’s standards. This meant staying in close touch with Nike’s team to make sure their vision was clear and that the Nike brand was visible throughout the game.

Development Challenges

The project had five different gameplay segments, including one that played with perspective in a wild, cyberpunk world. The team worked hard to design this level so players could easily understand where to go, even in a chaotic environment. They ended up creating a design that felt like an open corridor, guiding players through the experience.

Igor encourages everyone to jump into Airphoria in Fortnite. He and his team at Devoted Studios are proud of what they’ve created and believe it’s a really unique project.

How to Choose the Best Metaverse Platform for Your Brand: Roblox, Fortnite, or Sandbox?

watch 6 months

The metaverse is a big deal in the gaming and digital world today. More and more brands are turning to virtual spaces to connect with their audiences. Platforms like Roblox, Fortnite, and Sandbox allow companies to create fun, interactive experiences for users. But with so many options out there, how do you choose the best one for your brand?

Let’s break down these popular platforms—Roblox, Fortnite, and Sandbox—and see what they offer. By the end of this article, you’ll have a better idea of which platform fits your brand’s needs.

Why Brands Are Turning to the Metaverse

More and more companies are exploring metaverse games to engage their audiences. The metaverse lets people do more than just watch or read—they can interact with your brand in new, exciting ways. In fact, the metaverse could be a $5 trillion market by 2030, with 15% of corporate revenue expected to come from these creator platforms by 2028.

Comparing Roblox, Fortnite, and Sandbox

Each of these platforms has unique strengths, and the right one for your brand will depend on what you want to achieve with metaverse games.

Roblox: Creativity for a Younger Audience

Roblox is all about letting users create their own games and worlds. Brands can tap into this by building custom experiences or launching virtual products within Roblox. Here’s why Roblox might work for you:

Massive Audience Roblox has over 70 million daily users—many of whom are kids and teens.
User Spending Roblox users spend around $11.92 a day, showing that they are eager to buy virtual goods, whether it’s a branded item or game experience.
Brand Success Big brands are already working with Roblox developers. In fact, Hello Kitty generates $37,500 in daily revenue from Roblox, and Gucci sold a virtual bag for $4,115

Roblox is perfect for brands targeting a younger audience. Brands can create games or virtual stores to sell branded items or offer interactive experiences. And Devoted Studios can help you to activate your brand on Roblox.

Fortnite: High-Quality, Large-Scale Experiences

Fortnite is known for its large, high-quality virtual events and games. Brands that want to create an immersive experience with polished visuals often turn to Fortnite. Here’s why it’s a strong contender:

Massive Reach Fortnite has over 250 million monthly players, making it one of the most popular platforms in the metaverse.
Big Spending Fortnite users spend an average of $84.67 per player, meaning they’re ready to engage with and purchase premium digital goods.
Brand Collaborations Many well-known brands have already had success with Fortnite. Nike, Marvel, and Ferrari have all created virtual experiences or in-game items that reach millions.

To succeed on Fortnite, you’ll want to hire a metaverse developer that specializes as a Fortnite game development or a UEFN developer (Unreal Editor for Fortnite) to build exciting, branded islands, mini-games, or in-game assets like character skins. Devoted Studios has a lot of experience in building these kinds of experiences, like our work on Nike Airphoria Vol. 2 in Fortnite.

Sandbox: A Blockchain-Driven Platform

Unlike Roblox and Fortnite, Sandbox is a blockchain-powered platform where users can create, own, and trade virtual goods as NFTs (non-fungible tokens). This makes it different and appealing to brands interested in digital ownership and decentralized experiences.

Ownership and Trade Sandbox lets users buy, sell, and own virtual items using NFTs. Brands can create exclusive digital products that fans can own.
Retro Vibes Sandbox uses a voxel-based design, which has a more retro, pixelated look. If your brand has a quirky or vintage aesthetic, Sandbox could be a good fit.
Growing Community While Sandbox’s audience isn’t as large as Roblox or Fortnite yet, it’s rapidly growing, especially among those interested in blockchain and NFTs.

Working with a Sandbox developer like us will help you navigate this platform and create metaverse games with branded items or experiences that resonate with the community.  Devoted Studios has also contributed to exciting projects like Hell’s Kitchen in The Sandbox, where we made unique gaming experiences that bring the popular cooking show into the metaverse.

How Big Brands Are Activating Their Presence

Several big companies are already making their mark in the metaverse. For example, Disney is working with Epic Games to create large, open-world games in Fortnite. Disney has even invested $1.5 billion in this project, showing how serious they are about joining the metaverse.

LEGO is also teaming up with Fortnite to create fun, family-friendly experiences. Players can design their own LEGO islands, proving that even famous brands are using the metaverse to get creative and connect with people.

Why Agile is Key to a Successful Game Development Process

watch 6 months

Game development is an intricate process. As any game development company will tell you, it’s a blend of creativity, technical complexity, collaboration, and constant iteration. One moment, everything is progressing smoothly, and the next, unforeseen challenges arise that can derail even the most well-thought-out plans.

From ideation to launch, the process of making a video game is full of moving parts, and without careful planning and execution, it can quickly become overwhelming.

Why is Game Development So Complicated?

The process of game development is often compared to constructing a building; it requires a strong foundation, intricate design, and meticulous execution. It’s a complex process that involves blending creativity with technology and bringing together a diverse group of talented people—all working toward the same goal. On top of that, the gaming industry is always evolving, with new technology, trends, and player expectations constantly changing the landscape.

For starters, the creative vision behind a game needs to align with what’s technically possible. Sometimes, what looks amazing in concept doesn’t work as well when you start coding or testing it. Other times, you discover new ideas or improvements during development, which can lead to changes in the original plan.

What Are The Main Stages Of Game Development?

  • Conceptualization and ideation
  • Pre-production
  • Production
  • Testing and quality assurance
  • Launch

At Devoted Studios, we’ve streamlined our game development process to make it as smooth and fast as possible. Our team has developed a structured approach that allows us to tackle each stage of the game development process efficiently while staying flexible enough to handle any surprises that come our way.

Stages of game development: Step-by-Step

To better understand why the game development process can be unpredictable, we are going to break down the game development process step by step. Each stage of game development comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities, and having a clear structure helps development teams stay on track.

Conceptualization and Ideation

Every great game begins with an idea. During the conceptualization stage, our team at Devoted Studios works closely with clients to flesh out the game’s core concept. What kind of game will it be? What is the storyline? What are the key mechanics that will drive gameplay? These questions guide the initial brainstorming sessions.

All of the stages of game development might seem like the easiest, but it’s foundational. The clearer the concept, the smoother the development process will be later on. So we have several important questions, like:

What is the core concept of the game?
Who is our target audience?
What is the main gameplay mechanic?
What platforms will the game be developed for?
What are the key features of the game?
What is the game’s art style and tone?
What are the technical requirements?
What are the potential challenges?
What is the timeline and budget?
What is the long-term vision for the game?

At Devoted Studios, we collaborate closely with our clients during this phase, ensuring that their vision is clear and aligned with market trends and player expectations. This sets the foundation for the entire development process and helps reduce surprises later on.

Pre-production: Laying the Groundwork

Once we have a solid idea for the game, we move into pre-production. This is where we start planning everything. We build early versions of the game, make a roadmap for development, and figure out the overall size and details of the project. We also decide which tools and technology we’ll use, and we organize the team to make sure everyone knows what they’ll be working on.

Pre-production Step Description
Solidify game idea Finalize the core concept and gameplay mechanics.
Build early versions of the game (prototypes) Develop basic prototypes to test early ideas and gameplay features.
Create a development roadmap Plan out the timeline for each stage of development.
Determine project scope and size Establish the game’s scope including key features and resources needed.
Decide on tools and technology stack Choose the technology and software required for development.
Organize team structure and assign roles Assign team members to specific roles and responsibilities.

By planning things out carefully and breaking the project into smaller, manageable tasks, we can spot potential problems early and fix them before they cause bigger issues. During this stage, we also set deadlines and budgets so that everyone knows what’s expected.

We use project management software to plan everything in detail, making sure that timelines are realistic and resources are used efficiently.

Production: Building the Game

The production phase is where the magic happens, and the game starts taking shape. During this phase, the development team writes the code, the artists create the visual assets, and the sound designers develop the audio elements. It’s the longest stage of the process and often the most challenging. But with clear guidelines in place, Devoted Studios ensures this phase remains organized and efficient.

We use collaboration tools and regular check-ins to track progress, making sure every team member is on the same page. Agile methodology allows us to be flexible and adapt quickly to changes, whether it’s a shift in design direction or a necessary technical adjustment. At this stage, playtesting also begins, and we gather feedback to make iterative improvements to the game.

Testing and Quality Assurance

No game leaves Devoted Studios without rigorous testing. The testing phase is critical because it ensures that the game runs smoothly and that there are no major bugs or glitches. Our quality assurance team checks the game on various platforms, testing for performance, functionality, and user experience. This step involves multiple rounds of playtesting, both internally and externally.

We believe in catching potential issues early to avoid last-minute surprises. Continuous testing throughout production helps us maintain a high-quality standard, ultimately leading to smoother releases.

Launch: Bringing the Game to Market

The launch phase is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. After months or even years of hard work, the game is finally ready to be introduced to players. Our team at Devoted Studios works closely with clients to create a strong marketing strategy to build anticipation for the release. We handle the technical aspects of publishing the game across platforms, ensuring everything is in place for a smooth launch.

Our post-launch support doesn’t end when the game is live. We monitor feedback, track performance, and are ready to roll out patches and updates as needed. This continuous support helps ensure the game’s long-term success.

How Devoted Studios Makes the Game Development Process Smooth and Efficient

At Devoted Studios, we’ve developed a game development process that ensures a smooth, efficient workflow while allowing for creativity and flexibility. Our secret to success lies in a few key factors:

Collaboration We believe that clear communication is key.
Our team works closely with clients throughout the entire game development process, keeping them informed at every step of the way.
Time Tracking and Task Management We use tools like Jira and the Tempo plugin to track time and tasks effectively. This level of transparency helps us meet deadlines and keep the project on schedule.
Our clients are regularly updated on progress, so they always know where things stand.
Quality Control Before any asset or feature is submitted to the client, it undergoes thorough internal reviews and analysis. This ensures that everything is polished and meets the high-quality standards that Devoted Studios is known for.
We take 100% responsibility for each delivery, so our clients can be confident that what they receive is ready to go.
Finding the Right Talent We have a network of over 1,900 talented individuals, each with unique skills and expertise. Using our ARCA system (Capability, Availability, Relevance, and Affordability), we find the best people for every project.
Whether it’s artists, animators, or sound designers, we make sure the right talent is working on the right tasks.
Agile and Adaptable The gaming industry is fast-paced and ever-changing, so we remain agile and flexible. By breaking down the game development process into sprints and working in short, iterative cycles, we can quickly adapt to new challenges or changes in direction.

The process of making a video game is complex, filled with creative challenges and technical hurdles. However, at Devoted Studios, we’ve refined a game development process that keeps everything running smoothly. From conceptualization to launch, we guide our clients through every step, ensuring that their vision becomes a reality.

By focusing on collaboration, quality, and efficiency, we take the unpredictability out of game development, making it a more enjoyable and successful experience for everyone involved. Whether you’re a seasoned game development company or a newcomer looking to bring your first game to life, Devoted Studios is here to help every step of the way.

How to Become a Successful Indie Game Developer: Insights and Steps

watch 6 months

Indie games often stand out because they bring something different to the table.

If you love games and have always wanted to make your own, becoming an indie game developer could be a great path for you. And knowing you’re here, it sounds like you are ready to put your own twist on the gaming world, creating games that are as fun to make as they are to play!

Before we guide you through the steps on how to become a successful indie game developer, let’s talk about definition.

What is an Indie Game?

An indie game – short for independent game – is a video game typically developed by individuals or smaller development teams without the financial support of a large publisher. These games often emphasize innovation, creativity, and a personal touch.

Because they aren’t tied to the typical constraints of larger game studios, indie games have a more diverse themes and game mechanics, often blending genres or breaking traditional gaming conventions. This often leads to games that challenge players’ expectations and offer new kinds of interactive experiences.

In simple words, an indie game is a game created by small teams or individuals without big publisher support

And without the financial backing of major publishers, who often stick to big-budget games and avoid risks, indie developers are freer to experiment. This means indie developers can try out new and unique ideas that might not happen in bigger companies.

Indie Games VS. AAA Games Studios

In 2023, indie game development and AAA studio production showcased their distinctive roles within the gaming industry. Small independent (indie) game studios dominated Steam, accounting for about 99 percent of releases, which amounted to roughly 13,790 titles.

So what makes indie game development different from AAA studios?

Aspects Indie Game Development AAA Studio Productions
Budget Typically operates on a smaller budget, often funded by personal savings, crowdfunding, or indie publishers. Large budgets backed by major publishers, allowing for high production values.
Team Size Small teams ranging from a single individual to a few dozen members. Large teams consisting of hundreds of professionals across various specializations.
Creative Control High degree of creative freedom, allowing for experimentation with new ideas and mechanics. Creative decisions are often influenced by market research and profitability concerns.
Development Time Can vary greatly; some games are developed quickly due to fewer complexities, others may take longer. Typically longer development cycles due to scale and complexity of projects.
Game Scope Often more focused and niche, with innovative or experimental gameplay elements. Broad appeal to ensure large market reach; often focused on proven formulas.
Marketing Smaller, community-focused marketing efforts. Sometimes reliant on viral marketing or grassroots movements. Extensive marketing campaigns with significant budgets to ensure high visibility.
Distribution Typically digital distribution on platforms like Steam, itch.io, or direct sales from developers’ websites. Wide distribution, including both digital and physical retail presence globally.
Risk Taking More likely to take risks and develop niche content due to lower financial stakes. Risk-averse; tends to stick to successful genres and sequels to maximize profits.
Player Interaction Direct interaction with players through forums, beta testing, and early access feedback. Interaction often handled by customer service teams; less direct feedback into development.

Steps to Becoming a Successful Indie Game Developer

How to make an indie game successful? Making an indie game successful includes a mix of creativity, strategic planning, and community engagement. Here are some key strategies to consider:

Step 1: Learn the Basics Before you make a game, you need to understand how games are made. Learning about game design, coding, and art is crucial. You can find tons of tutorials and classes online that can teach you what you need to know.
Step 2: Come Up with a Great Idea What makes your game different? Think about what new or fun element you can bring to the gaming world. Maybe it’s a cool story, a new kind of challenge, or a beautiful art style.
Step 3: Make a Plan and Follow Through Good planning helps turn your game idea into reality. Using tools like Unity or Unreal Engine can help you build your game. Remember, making a game is about trying things out and improving them based on what players say.
Step 4: Get the Word Out As you build your game, start talking about it. Use social media, gaming forums, and early versions of your game to connect with players. This community can provide valuable feedback and support.

How Do You Get Funding for an Indie Game Development?

Let’s be honest, even a small indie game development needs some funding. In fact, it can be one of the steps to turn a game idea into reality, especially for indie game studios who work without the large budgets of major studios. Here are some common ways indie developers can secure funding for their projects:

Funding Method How It Works Benefits Drawbacks
Crowdfunding Developers present their game ideas on platforms like Kickstarter with tiered rewards for backers.
Engages community early; funds before development. Can be competitive; no guarantee of meeting goals.
Early Access Sales Release the game in an incomplete state for feedback and funding on platforms like Steam Early Access. Immediate funding; valuable player feedback. Pressure to update regularly; player expectations.
Patronage and Subscriptions Use platforms like Patreon where fans subscribe to support development in exchange for exclusive content. Steady income stream; builds community. Requires regular content updates; slow funding growth.
Government Grants Apply for funding from programs supporting arts and innovation. Non-repayable; supports creative freedom. Competitive; limited availability.
Game Incubator Programs Programs that provide funding, mentoring, and resources to help developers bring their game to market. Expert guidance; networking opportunities.. Often highly competitive; may require equity or revenue share.
Personal Savings Use personal funds to finance the development, commonly known as bootstrapping. Full creative control; no external pressures. High financial risk; limited budget.

Thatgamecompany and Their Game, Sky: Children of the Light is one of the most successful Indie Games

Thatgamecompany is a standout example of what indie developers can achieve with creativity and innovation. Their game, Sky: Children of the Light,  is known as an “open world social indie adventure game,” which means it’s all about social interaction in a game where players can explore wherever they want.

The game really shows off what makes indie games special. Unlike many big-budget AAA games that focus a lot on flashy graphics and reaching as many players as possible, Sky: Children of the Light takes a different path.

It’s all about telling a moving story and bringing players together to share in those emotional moments. This approach gives players a truly unique and connecting experience, something that sticks with them.

Is Fall Guys Really the Best Cross-Platform Game?

watch 7 months

Imagine playing a game with your friends, no matter what device they use—PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or Switch. No barriers, just fun! That’s the beauty of cross-platform games.

Leading the way is Fall Guys—a bright, playful, and totally addictive game that has everyone hooked. Alexander McKinney-Raphelt, a studio Art Director at @Epic Games, shared insightful details about the creative process behind Fall Guys, explaining how the game’s visual style played a crucial role in its success.

He mentioned that one of the key design choices was to associate every color in the game with something sweet, like candy, saying, “When we created Fall Guys… every color in the game needs to be associated with candy. So, all the colors are like vanilla, cherry, orange, whatever.”

“So that’s purposely stated, it’s just a very cutesy, sweet world,” he continued.

With its simple yet exciting gameplay and the ability to play with anyone, anywhere, it’s no surprise that Fall Guys has become a huge hit.

Let’s Start With… What Are Cross-Platform Games?

Cross-platform games are video games that allow players to connect and play together across multiple devices or systems, all within the same servers. Whether you’re playing on a PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or mobile device, cross-platform games allow users to interact and play with others, regardless of the platform they are using. This feature has become a key component of the gaming community as it bridges the gap between players who may not own the same gaming consoles or devices.

What are some cross-platform games? Well, besides Fall Guys, other well-known titles include Fortnite, Minecraft, and Call of Duty: Warzone. Each of these games offers cross-platform video games experiences.

Why Fall Guys Stands Out Among Cross-Platform Games

Fall Guys was released in 2020, developed by Mediatonic, and instantly captured the attention of gamers. Here’s why the game has managed to win the hearts of so many players:

Why Do People Love Cross-Platform Gaming?

The best part of cross-platform games lies in the inclusivity they bring to players everywhere. For years, gaming was limited by the type of console or system you owned, and playing with friends often meant everyone needed the same device. However, cross-platform video games have shattered these barriers, allowing for a more collaborative and competitive environment.

Alexander McKinney-Raphelt, in the discussion with Devoted SpeakEasy Episode. 08, emphasized this inclusivity, stating, “It’s so simple. It’s what kids do. You just run down the street, you know. And that’s basically the game design.” The simplicity of Fall Guys, paired with its ability to unite players across platforms, has fostered a larger and more diverse community.

For Fall Guys, this means players from different consoles—whether they’re on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, or Switch—can all dive into the same fun, chaotic world together. McKinney-Raphelt noted how this aspect resonated with both the creators and the community, saying,

“The more you play, the more crowns you can potentially win… some special things you can only win if you’re a really good player.”

Another reason for the success of Fall Guys is its easy learning curve. The controls are straightforward, and the goal is simple: navigate through a series of increasingly tricky obstacle courses and be the last one standing. However, as McKinney-Raphelt explained, the challenge comes in mastering the game’s unpredictable nature, “It’s super easy to grasp but very hard to master.” No two matches are the same, which keeps players coming back for more. This unpredictability, along with cross-platform play, helps to create a vibrant, ever-growing community that transcends platforms and keeps the game fresh and engaging for everyone involved.

The Role of Unity in Cross-Platform Gaming

When discussing cross-platform games, the technology behind them is key, and Unity is one of the leading engines that makes this possible. So, is Unity cross-platform? Absolutely. It’s one of the most widely used game development engines for creating cross-platform games, including the fan-favorite Fall Guys. Unity’s flexibility allows developers to create games that work seamlessly across multiple platforms, enabling players from different devices to connect in one shared experience.

At Devoted Studios, we pride ourselves on our expertise with Unity. We’ve helped developers bring their visions to life across a variety of platforms. Our team works closely with developers to make sure the games play smoothly and accessible to a broader audience—whether they’re on PC, console, or mobile.

We understand that cross-platform compatibility is important for growing a game’s community and keeping players engaged, and that’s why we focus on making sure your game can run seamlessly for everyone, no matter where they’re playing.

Fall Guys: A Cross-Platform Success Story

The success of Fall Guys as a cross-platform game can be attributed to several factors. First, the game’s design is engaging and fun. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its charm. Players can dress their characters in ridiculous costumes and compete in a series of obstacle courses that are both challenging and hilarious.

The second factor is the game’s accessibility. Whether you’re playing on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or Switch, you can jump into the exciting chaos with friends. This, of course, has become a huge draw for players who want to enjoy gaming without the barriers of platform restrictions. Being able to connect with friends who are using different consoles makes Fall Guys still one of the best cross-platform video games today.

Lastly, the community. The game’s light-hearted nature attracts a wide variety of players, from casual gamers to competitive pros. The inclusion of cross-platform play only enhances this sense of community, allowing players from all over the world to come together and enjoy the game.

NFT Blockchain Game in 2024: Is It Still Relevant?

watch 7 months

The simple answer is, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) gaming will actually change the world in 2024. But, how? With all the buzz around new technology, NFTs, and blockchain that began to be everywhere from 2018 to 2022, you might be wondering if this trend is here to stay or if it was just a passing fad.

While some trends in technology come and go, NFT gaming is different—it has the potential to reshape not just how we play games but how we view ownership in the digital space. From early buzz and experimental games to today’s full-fledged virtual economies, NFT gaming has come a long way.

Now in 2024, NFTs are more than just a trend—they’re a transformative technology set to leave a lasting mark on the gaming industry.

But how did we get here? How did NFTs go from a niche concept to a mainstream phenomenon? And more importantly, why is NFT gaming still relevant today?

Let’s talk about what NFT gaming is all about, how it became popular, and what’s next for this innovative technology.

How Did NFTs Game Become Popular?

Before we go further, what is NFT gaming? NFT gaming refers to video games that incorporate Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), allowing players to own, trade, or sell unique in-game assets that are stored on the blockchain.

Unlike traditional games, where items like characters, weapons, or skins are controlled by the game developers and cannot be used outside the game, NFT games give players full ownership of their digital items. These assets, such as virtual land, rare characters, or special abilities, are represented as NFTs, which means they are one-of-a-kind and cannot be duplicated. This creates a new layer of interaction where players can buy, sell, or trade their assets across different platforms.

The rise of NFTs can be traced back to the period between 2012 to 2013 with the introduction of Colored Coins on the Bitcoin blockchain, which represented real-world assets digitally. Though simple, this idea laid the groundwork for what NFTs would become.

In 2017, CryptoPunks and CryptoKitties on the Ethereum blockchain brought NFTs into the spotlight. CryptoKitties, a game allowing players to trade and breed virtual cats, introduced the ERC-721 standard, making NFTs unique and non-interchangeable. From 2018 to 2022, NFTs gained massive popularity, with high-profile sales like Beeple’s digital artwork selling for $69 million in 2021, cementing NFTs as a major force in digital ownership and gaming.

The NFT Games Market in 2024

The NFT games market in 2024 continues to grow and evolve, solidifying its place in the gaming industry. Thanks to advancements in blockchain technology, NFT games have become more accessible, user-friendly, and engaging. This steady progress shows no signs of slowing down, and here’s why NFT games are still making an impact today:

True Ownership and Control

One of the primary reasons NFT games remain relevant is the concept of true ownership. Unlike traditional games where in-game items, characters, or land are owned by the game developers, NFT gaming gives players real ownership of these assets. Because NFTs are stored on a decentralized blockchain, players can buy, sell, or trade their in-game assets in open markets, even outside the game environment. This ability to transfer and maintain ownership across platforms keeps players engaged, as they know their time and investment are secure and potentially profitable.

The Play-to-Earn Model

The play-to-earn (P2E) model continues to drive the popularity of NFT games in 2024. Players can earn real-world money through gameplay by selling their NFTs or participating in in-game economies. Games like Axie Infinity have proven that players, especially in certain regions, can make substantial income by playing these games. This financial incentive adds a layer of relevance and interest beyond entertainment, especially in a world where digital economies are expanding.

Increased Integration with the Metaverse

With the rise of the metaverse, NFT games are becoming more integrated into these virtual worlds. Players can now own virtual land, build properties, and create unique experiences that other users can interact with, much like in the physical world. As the concept of the metaverse grows, the ability to own and trade assets across multiple virtual worlds makes NFT gaming a key component in how people experience and interact with digital spaces.

Investment and Innovation

Investors and major gaming companies continue to see the potential in NFT gaming. The significant investment flowing into NFT game development means that these games are only going to get better, with improved graphics, gameplay mechanics, and more immersive experiences.

Cross-Platform and Interoperable Assets

In 2024, the concept of interoperability—where NFT assets can be used across different games or platforms—is becoming more common. Players can carry their unique items, such as weapons or characters, from one game to another, creating a cohesive experience across multiple gaming ecosystems.

Devoted Studios Brings Your Metaverse Vision to Life

One of our notable NFT gaming projects Devoted Studios has worked on is Magic Craft, a massive war and conquest play-to-earn multiplayer game launched on the Binance Smart Chain. In Magic Craft, players form clans, engage in battles, and vie for dominance in a world driven by an advanced guild system, where victors can collect taxes in the game’s native cryptocurrency, $MCRT. The game’s unique economy and taxation system create a competitive and rewarding environment, making it a standout in the NFT gaming space.

Conclusion: Why NFT Gaming Matters in 2024?

In 2024, NFT gaming is not just surviving—it’s evolving and expanding into new, exciting territories. The combination of true ownership, the play-to-earn model, integration with the metaverse, and ongoing technological advancements ensures that NFT games will continue to shape the future of the gaming industry. With more players, developers, and investors getting involved, NFT gaming is set to remain a key part of how we experience and interact with digital worlds.
