Best 5 Mobile Gaming Genres In 2024

watch 7 months

Mobile gaming is now bigger than ever. More people are choosing to play games on their phones because of the convenience—being able to play anytime, anywhere. With total mobile gaming revenue in the US reaching $5.71 billion.

What’s even more interesting is how popular mobile gaming is with younger generations. Gen Alpha (kids born after 2010) and Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) love playing on their phones. In 2020, 79% of active mobile game players were Gen Z and Gen Alpha. This change toward mobile gaming is clear, and as phones get better, gaming on them becomes even more enjoyable.

In this article, we will look at the top five mobile game genres in 2024, exploring what makes each one special and why they are so popular amongst players.

Casual Games

Casual games remain a massive hit in 2024. These games are designed for anyone to pick up and play, even if they only have a few minutes to spare. They’re simple, fun, and often free, making them a favorite for people of all ages.

Key Features of Casual Games:
Simple controls and mechanics
Short play sessions
Broad audience appeal
Usually free-to-play with in-app purchases

Why Are Casual Games Popular?

Casual games are designed to be easy to pick up and play. They’re designed to be easy and fun, even for people who don’t see themselves as “serious” gamers. The simple mechanics and straightforward gameplay mean that anyone, no matter their skill level, can jump in and start enjoying the game almost instantly.

Classic hits like Candy Crush Saga and Subway Surfers continue to be favorites, while newer titles like Royal Match are quickly gaining popularity, keeping the casual gaming genre as one of the most played on mobile platforms.

Role-Playing Games (RPGs)

Role-playing games have only grown more popular and expansive on mobile devices. Players love RPGs for their deep storytelling, character development, and world-building. Many RPGs now come with console-level graphics, giving players a rich experience on their phones.

Key Features of RPG Games:
Rich storylines and world-building
Character development through leveling up and customization
Often turn-based or action-oriented combat systems
Strategic decision-making

Why Are RPG Games popular?

RPGs are incredibly popular because they offer a deep and immersive experience that keeps players engaged for the long term. One of the key reasons is character progression—players can level up, unlock new abilities, and customize their characters.

In 2024, Genshin Impact is considered one of the good mobile games that continue to thrive with stunning visuals, engaging combat, and frequent updates that keep players coming back. Newer titles like HonKai Star Rail is also bringing fresh energy to the genre, mixing turn-based combat with a sci-fi setting.

Battle Royale Games

Battle Royale games are action-packed, multiplayer experiences where players compete to be the last person (or team) standing in a shrinking play area. These games are fast-paced and often involve both shooting and survival elements.

Key Features of a Battle Royal Games:
Multiplayer-focused, often with large player counts
Shrinking play areas to force encounters
Fast-paced, high-adrenaline gameplay
Customizable characters and equipment

PUBG Mobile was one of the first and most successful battle royale games on mobile, where players parachute onto an island, collect weapons, and fight to be the last one standing. However, in recent years, Fortnite has surged in popularity in the mobile gaming space.

Why Do Battle Royale Games Stand Out?

Battle royale games have gained massive popularity due to their high-energy gameplay and competitive nature. They are easy to start playing but hard to master, making them addictive for players. For developers, this genre provides opportunities to build large, competitive communities.

Puzzle Games

Puzzle games are a consistent favorite because they combine fun with a bit of brainpower. In 2024, puzzle games have grown to offer more interactive and visually appealing experiences, but they still maintain the simple logic-based mechanics that made them so loved.

Key Features of a puzzle game:
Problem-solving mechanics
Often involve logic, matching, or spatial awareness
Can be played in short sessions
Appeals to a broad audience

Why Are Puzzle Games popular?

Puzzle games challenge the mind while being easy to play at any time. They’re perfect for players who enjoy problem-solving in short sessions.

Tetris was one of the earliest and most iconic puzzle games, while new titles that came up in the recent year like Monument Valley and Gardenscapes have taken the puzzle genre to new heights.

Play-to-Earn Games

Play-to-earn games are a relatively new and exciting genre that has gained popularity thanks to blockchain technology. These games allow players to earn real-world rewards, such as cryptocurrency or NFTs (non-fungible tokens), by playing the game.

Key Features of plat-to-earn games:
Rewards players with in-game assets that have real-world value
Often linked to blockchain technology
Requires investment in terms of time or money to maximize earnings
Community-driven with a focus on trading and collecting

What Makes Play-to-Earn Games Popular?

The appeal of play-to-earn games lies in the ability to earn money while playing. This genre is attracting both gamers and investors, making it one of the fastest-growing trends in the gaming industry.

Some examples of play-to-earn games include Axie Infinity, where players can collect, breed, and battle creatures called Axies. Players earn cryptocurrency through in-game activities, which can then be traded for real money. Another popular title is The Sandbox, a virtual world where players can create, own, and monetize their gaming experiences using NFTs and the game’s native cryptocurrency, making it a favorite among play-to-earn gamers.

First-Person Shooter Games

First-person shooter (FPS) games are another highly popular genre in mobile gaming. In these games, players experience the action through the eyes of their character, making for an immersive and intense gaming experience. FPS games often focus on fast-paced combat, where players engage in shootouts, either in single-player missions or in multiplayer modes against other players.

Key Features of FPS Games:
Fast-paced, action-packed gameplay
First-person perspective for immersive experiences
Multiplayer modes, often with team-based combat
Customizable weapons and gear

Call of Duty: Mobile is One of the top FPS games franchises ported to mobile, and PUBG Mobile: While known for its battle royale mode, PUBG Mobile also has FPS gameplay elements that add to its intense combat experience.

Why Do FPS Games Stand Out?

FPS games are loved for their fast-paced action and competitive nature. Players enjoy the thrill of shootouts and the challenge of improving their skills to beat opponents. For developers, FPS games offer a chance to create highly engaging and competitive experiences that keep players coming back for more.

The Changing Art Styles in Gaming

One of the big topics in this episode is how art styles in games have changed over the years. Allen talks about how Warcraft games became known for their oversized armor and weapons, which started out as a way to deal with the limitations of early game graphics.

“One of the big specialties of Warcraft was creating much bigger armor and much bigger weapons, and that was pretty much due to the constraints of how the graphics and the pixels looked back then.”

This unique style has influenced many other games, especially in the mobile gaming world. Allen also mentions that games like Genshin Impact and League of Legends mix different cultural influences, creating fresh and appealing art styles that attract players from around the world.

“With new games like Genshin Impact and the Asian influences we’re seeing in League of Legends and other titles, I feel like there’s a new era of the art style that is coming. It’s almost like there’s a giant mashup happening in the industry.”

Creative Freedom and Challenges

“Back then we debated everything we made sure was cool. And then we just kind of went with our gut and just made fun, awesome stuff.”

Allen shares insights into the creative process at Blizzard, explaining how in the early days, there was a lot of freedom to make decisions based on what felt fun and exciting. However, as Blizzard grew, there were more layers of approval and analysis, which sometimes made it harder to innovate.

He describes this as “paralysis by analysis,” where overthinking can get in the way of creativity. In larger companies, finding the right balance between creative freedom and business goals can be tricky. Allen reflects on how, in the early days, Blizzard’s creative team would often gather to pitch wild ideas and experiment freely. He recalls proposing “some crazy stuff over the years” and how those ideas, even the most unconventional ones, were often given a chance to shine. This open, experimental environment was a big part for fostering creativity and led to the development of some of Blizzard’s most iconic game features.

Handling Pressure and Anxiety

“We didn’t know enough to be scared. We were just like, you know, naive. And it’s like we can do anything, that’s just do this.”

Working on hugely popular games like StarCraft and World of Warcraft comes with a lot of pressure. Fans have high expectations, and making changes can be nerve-wracking. Allen talks about the anxiety of making sure they didn’t disappoint players while still trying to keep the games fresh and exciting. His advice for handling this pressure is to stay true to what made the games great in the first place while finding ways to introduce new ideas that surprise and delight players.

Alle also acknowledges the emotional rollercoaster of game development, especially when facing feedback from the community. He remembers, after releasing Warcraft III, going online to read reviews, only to be met with harsh criticism. “I was so proud of myself… I’m going to go online and look at all the accolades. And… it was just like hate.” Despite the criticism, Allen emphasizes the importance of not letting a vocal minority overshadow the enjoyment and satisfaction of the broader gaming community.

Tips for Fresh Ideas

“I think if you’re creating something new, it’s about trying to make it fresh but also accessible.”

Allen also offers valuable advice for coming up with new and innovative ideas. He suggests looking for inspiration everywhere—movies, books, art, or you name it! Allen believes the best ideas often come from mixing familiar concepts in new ways, making them both fresh and accessible.

For aspiring game developers, Allen’s advice is to trust their instincts, be open to new influences, and not be afraid to take creative risks. “You can execute differently on it. There’s lots of ways you can tweak things and enhance them to give your own flavor and spin on it.” Allen’s approach encourages developers to take known concepts and infuse them with their personal creative vision to create something truly unique.

The Future of Real-Time Strategy Games

“I think there’s still a lot of hope for more accessible RTSs that are more for the masses.”

Despite the changes in the gaming industry, Allen is hopeful about the future of real-time strategy (RTS) games. He thinks there’s still a big audience for RTS games, especially if they can be made more accessible to new players. Companies like Frost Giant Studios are exploring new ways to bring RTS games to a wider audience, which Allen sees as a positive development. While RTS games may not be as mainstream as shooters, their strategic depth and loyal fan base mean there’s still plenty of room for growth.

Allen also discusses why there was never a StarCraft III, explaining that after years of supporting and expanding StarCraft II, Blizzard was not in a position to immediately embark on a new RTS journey. However, he believes that now, with time having passed, the community and developers might be ready to explore the RTS space again with fresh perspectives and ideas.

How Indie Games Are Becoming Industry Hits

watch 8 months

Indie games, created by independent game developers are making a huge impact. It is currently reshaping the industry and creating new opportunities for game development studios. So far, According to Xscolla Summer Report, 2024 has seen a remarkable surge in the popularity of indie games, signaling a shift away from the long-standing dominance of big-budget AAA titles.

Notable successes include Palworld, developed with a budget of $6.75 million, which has already sold over 25 million copies. This trend builds on the success of other popular indie games like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Among Us, Fall Guys, and Valheim

The rise of indie games is more than just a trend — many say that it is a movement that’s transforming how games are made, shared, and enjoyed by players around the world. This article looks at what’s driving the growth of indie games and how indie games have influenced the game industry.

How Did Indie Games Become Popular?

Independent game studios and developers are on the rise, with more gamers choosing indie games than ever before. The percentage of American PC and console gamers playing indie games grew from 13% in 2021 to 18% in 2024. This growing interest is reflected in the average Steam ratings for indie games, which stand at 72%, nearly matching the 74% rating of AAA titles.

This surge in popularity challenges the long-standing dominance of big-budget AAA games, and there are some reasons for this shift.

One major factor is that indie games can take risks and explore new ideas in ways that AAA titles often don’t. This willingness to experiment has led to fresh and exciting games that stand out, attracting players who crave something different. Another reason is the increased accessibility of game development. In the past, making a game required significant resources, limiting the industry to large studios with big budgets.

Also nowadays, with powerful and affordable game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine, the barriers to entry have been lowered significantly. So today, even a small team — or a single developer — can create a high-quality game that competes on the global stage.

What Drives Indie Players to Play Video Games?

Indie gamers are often motivated by experiences that allow them to step beyond the boundaries of reality. About 35% of indie gamers play to engage in activities they cannot do in real life, which is significantly higher compared to 23% of gamers from other popular genres.

Moreover, indie gamers are 80% more likely to seek out opportunities to interact with gamers globally, highlighting their strong preference for a connected, community-oriented gaming experience. This desire for emotional connection and global interaction drives many indie gamers to choose titles that offer these unique and immersive experiences, setting them apart from players of other genres.

Growing Markets for Indie Games

The growth of indie game development is not limited to traditional gaming hubs, it is expanding into emerging markets around the world. The empowerment of game creators, driven by advances in technology, affordable development tools, and accessible distribution platforms, has played a significant role in this global expansion. These factors have lowered the barriers to entry, allowing a diverse array of voices and ideas to flourish within the gaming industry.

As a result, developers from various backgrounds and regions can now contribute to the global gaming market.

Poland: An Indie Game Powerhouse

Poland has established itself as a leading hub for indie game development company in Europe. The country is home to renowned studios like CD Projekt Red, Mighty Koi, and 11 Bit Studios, which have helped create a vibrant and thriving game development scene. The local government has been instrumental in this success, providing essential funding and resources that support indie developers. This supportive environment has enabled Polish studios to produce some of the industry’s most acclaimed games.

India: A Rising Star in Game Development

India’s indie game development sector is experiencing rapid growth. With a large pool of tech-savvy talent, the country is becoming a prime location for game development. Indie studios like Broken Helm and Xigma Games are coloring India’s reputation in the industry. The government in India has played a supportive role, offering funding and resources to help indie developers flourish, making it a rising force in the global gaming market.

Kazakhstan: Entering the Game Scene

Kazakhstan is quickly making a name for itself in the indie game development world. Despite its relatively small industry, the country hosts game development studios such as HugePixel and Dreamgate Company. The government’s support, through necessary funding and resources, has been key to nurturing aspiring game developers in Kazakhstan, helping to build a new and dynamic gaming scene.

Romania: Historical and Growing Indie Presence

Romania’s indie game development sector is thriving, building on a rich history of game creation. Leading studios like 16 Bit Nights, Alien Pixel, and Metagame Studio are at the forefront of this growth. The local government has significantly contributed to the expansion, offering funding and resources to support indie game studios.

The Role of Game Outsourcing in the Indie Game Boom

When we think of game outsourcing in the gaming industry, we often picture large AAA studios hiring external teams to manage the massive workload that comes with developing blockbuster titles. However, outsourcing is not just a strategy for big-budget games; indie developers are also increasingly relying on it to bring their creative visions to life.

Indie game studios, though smaller in size and budget, face many of the same challenges as their AAA counterparts. They need high-quality art, sound, programming, and sometimes even marketing support to make their games stand out in a competitive market. With limited resources, indie developers often turn to game outsourcing to fill these gaps.

How Have Indie Games Influenced the Gaming Industry?

Indie games are having a significant impact on the gaming industry as a whole. They are changing how games are developed, influencing player expectations, and driving important shifts across the board.

Democratizing Game Development

The indie game movement is democratizing game development. With the right tools and a good idea, anyone can create a game, regardless of their background or resources. This inclusivity has brought a wider variety of voices and ideas into the gaming industry, resulting in a broader array of games that appeal to different tastes and preferences.

Shifting Player Expectations

Indie games are raising the bar for player expectations. Gamers no longer settle for cookie-cutter experiences — they seek innovation, emotional depth, and meaningful gameplay. Indie games, with their focus on storytelling and creative mechanics, meet these demands and influence what players expect from all games.

Source:Wikimedia Commons

Building Strong Communities

Indie games often build strong, passionate communities that actively help shape their development. Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter let developers connect directly with players, creating a sense of community and loyalty. This direct interaction allows players to give feedback, which helps improve the games as they are being made. It also creates a dedicated fan base that is excited to support the game and share it with others, helping indie games gain attention and success in a crowded market.

Key Takeaways

The rise of indie games is bringing a new chapter to the gaming industry, one that focuses on creativity, making games more accessible, and building strong communities. Game development studios now face both challenges and opportunities in this changing landscape. By embracing the indie approach — encouraging new ideas, using easy-to-access tools, and connecting with players — studios can succeed.

As the indie game market keeps growing, game development studios have a chance to change what it means to create and launch a successful game. The message is simple: great games can come from anywhere. It’s up to the studios to tap into this potential and create the next big indie hit.

How We Grow Leaders in Game Development at Devoted Studios

watch 8 months

At Devoted Studios, we believe that making great games is not only about having the best technology or the coolest ideas—though those are definitely important. What really makes the magic happen is having strong leaders who can bring it all together. Leaders who inspire, guide, and help everyone reach their full potential.

At Devoted Studios, we know that strong leaders are key to our success in the game industry. Whether it’s creating games or managing outsourced projects, having the right leaders in place makes all the difference. In this article, we want to share how we help our team members grow into great leaders, with insights from one of our own, Kseniia Mendeliuk, who is our Lead Talent Account Manager, who’s been an incredible part of our team.

Get to know Kseniia Mendeliuk

Kseniia’s journey into the game development industry began at the ArtCraft digital school in Ukraine. This wasn’t just any school—it was a place where budding artists were transformed into skilled game developers. Kseniia wasn’t just a student there; she took on the roles of both mentor and organizer. She helped new artists develop their skills while also sharpening her own talents in 2D and 3D art. This experience was like boot camp for her career, laying a solid foundation for everything that came next.

After her time at ArtCraft, Kseniia moved on to Playrix, a huge name in the game industry. There, she worked in the Recruiter Department, which was a big shift from her previous role. But Kseniia is nothing if not adaptable. This job at Playrix gave her a front-row seat to see how a big game development company operates from the inside. She learned a lot about how game development studios work, how to work within a large organization, and the importance of teamwork.

But then, life threw a curveball. The war in Ukraine forced Kseniia to make a tough decision: stay or seek new opportunities elsewhere. It wasn’t easy, but Kseniia chose to move on, and that decision led her to us at Devoted Studios. Now, she’s our Lead Talent Account Manager, and we could not be happier to have her on board.

Overcoming Early Career Challenges

Let’s talk about something that a lot of people face early in their careers: imposter syndrome. Yes, even someone as talented as Kseniia wasn’t immune to those nagging doubts. She describes it as feeling like a “small fish in a big ocean” of experts. We’ve all been there, right? That feeling where you are sure everyone around you knows more than you do, and you’re just waiting for someone to notice you don’t belong.

But here’s the thing—Kseniia didn’t let those feelings hold her back. She kept pushing forward, believing in herself even when it was hard. She learned to see mistakes as opportunities to grow, which is a lesson we can all use. Instead of beating herself up over every little error, she used them as stepping stones to get better. This mindset has been crucial in her journey, especially in the ever-changing world of game development outsourcing, where new challenges pop up all the time.

The most crucial advice I can offer to anyone grappling with these feelings is to persevere and maintain faith in oneself. It’s essential to embrace our mistakes as learning opportunities; each error teaches us something valuable and ensures that we won’t repeat the same missteps—though we may encounter new ones along the way.

Key Qualities for Leading Leaders

So, what does it take to be a great leader in game development? At Devoted Studios, we have learned that it is not just about managing tasks or making decisions. True leadership is about building a team that can lead too. Kseniia has some great insights on this.

She believes that a leader does not have to be an expert in everything. In fact, trying to do it all yourself is a recipe for burnout.

It’s a misconception to believe that being a leader equates to being a universal expert capable of handling every aspect of a project or organization. Rather, true leadership involves recognizing one’s strengths and, perhaps more importantly, acknowledging one’s weaknesses.

Instead, a good leader knows their strengths and weaknesses and brings together a team that complements them. For example, if you are fantastic at coming up with creative ideas but not so great at organizing details, it’s smart to bring in someone who excels in planning and execution. This way, the team’s strengths balance each other out, and you can all focus on what you do best.

Leadership Development at Devoted Studios.

When Kseniia joined us, one of the first things she noticed was that our Request for Proposal (RFP) Process was not as smooth as it could be. There was not a clear system in place, which made things a bit chaotic at times. But Kseniia didn’t just point out the problem—she took action to fix it.

She spent her first year with us building a new database from scratch. This wasn’t just any database, it was designed to be super user-friendly and easy to navigate. Kseniia made sure that anyone on her team, and even those in other departments, could access it without needing a lot of training. She personally taught each team member how to use it, making sure that everyone could take full advantage of this new tool.

This initiative has made a huge difference in how we manage our workflows in our game development studios. The new system has streamlined our operations, making it easier for everyone to stay on top of their tasks. It has also fostered a greater sense of teamwork because now everyone is on the same page.

Final Words…

At Devoted Studios, we’re all about growing leaders who are not only capable but also caring, creative, and confident. We believe that leadership is about more than just managing—it’s about inspiring others, building strong teams, and creating a workplace where everyone can thrive. Kseniia Mendeliuk’s journey is a perfect example of how we nurture leadership at every level, from overcoming early career challenges to taking the initiative to improve how we work.

We’re proud of the leaders we’ve developed here, and we’re excited about the future as we continue to grow and evolve as a game development company and as a game outsourcing company. Our leaders are ready to tackle whatever comes their way. And we’re having a great time doing it!

So, if you’re thinking about what makes a successful game development studio, remember this: it’s the people who lead with passion, creativity, and confidence that truly make a difference. And at Devoted Studios, we’re devoted to making sure our leaders are the best in the business.

The Making of Call of Duty Maps: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

watch 9 months

Creating maps for one of the most popular gaming franchises, Call of Duty, is no small feat. There is creativity, collaboration, and a lot of hard work involved in it. Shaun Bell, a seasoned art director, working over 20 years in the gaming industry, eventually landing at Treyarch, the studio behind some of the most iconic Call of Duty games.

On Speakeasy Episode #25 this time, he shared his experiences and insights on how these iconic maps are brought to life. And so, we have summarized the process of how Call of Duty maps are created. Keep reading!

What Is the Process of Building Maps for Call of Duty Like?

It’s been said before and we will say it again: Creating maps for Call of Duty is a complex and complicated process that requires a lot of team effort. Shaun explained the process of building maps for Call of Duty, and here it is:

It Starts With Globe-trotting

The concept of ‘globe-trotting’ is a key staple that the team builds upon, as Shaun explained.

“First, we think about what era we’re in and identify key historical moments that we can build ideas around and incorporate into the map. We start plotting down narrative elements from a story level and then map elements that align with those, ensuring alignment with the creative vision and the story.”

It begins with a deep understanding of the game’s historical setting. The team first determines the era in which the game is set and identifies key historical moments that can serve as inspiration for the map’s design. This step is amongst the most important ones because it provides a foundation for developing ideas and themes that are authentic and engaging. By doing this, the team can create a narrative backdrop that adds depth and context to the gameplay.

Then, after the historical framework is established, the team starts plotting out narrative elements and how they will be represented in the map. This involves integrating story-driven aspects with gameplay mechanics to ensure a cohesive experience. The design process includes considering how different parts of the map will reflect the historical setting and how these elements will guide the player’s journey.

Then, There Is Reference Gathering

The process of reference gathering begins with the creation of mood boards and style guides. These boards serve as a visual representation of the team’s creative vision and help everyone involved in the project be aligned with the same artistic direction.

Style guides complement mood boards by providing detailed instructions on the specific design elements to be used throughout the map, such as color palettes, lighting, architectural styles, and environmental details. This thorough preparation helps establish a consistent and immersive environment that reflects the era and historical context of the game.

“Reference gathering involves setting the tone of what this environment is about through mood boards and developing style guides.”

After That, the Design Collaboration Starts

Design collaboration is where designers and artists come together to shape the core gameplay elements of the map. This collaboration involves in-depth discussions and brainstorming sessions to determine the type of engagements players will encounter. For instance, the team decides whether the map will emphasize long-range engagements, which favor snipers and require open spaces, or close-quarters combat, which involves tight corridors and rapid confrontations.

Designers focus on the functional aspects of the map, such as player movement, sightlines, and strategic points of interest. They map out the flow of the game, ensuring that players have a balanced and engaging experience. Artists, on the other hand, bring these designs to life by integrating visual elements that support the gameplay. This includes designing environments that not only look visually appealing but also enhance the strategic depth of the map.

“Once we have a broad stroke of what the experience is going to be like, we talk with designers to get them on board. Designers start working through the core beats of the experience.”

Then Finally, the Actual Concept Development

During the concept phase, the main focus is on what players see when they first start a map. There is a design requirement to make sure players can quickly understand their surroundings and options. In Call of Duty, maps usually follow a three-lane strategy, which means there are three distinct paths or choices right from the start. This setup helps players make fast decisions, which is important because the game’s action is very quick.

“With Call of Duty there is an average of a typical three-lane strategy. So when you land into the map or when you start into a map you see what are your options ahead of you, and the time to kill is very short so we really try to present that information very clearly to the player.”

To make sure players can easily see their options, the art team must make each path look different. They use visual cues like different colors, lighting, and environmental details to make each path stand out. For example, one path might be brightly lit with open spaces, another might be a dark alley with tight corners, and the third might be an indoor area with unique features. The goal is to guide players visually without making it hard to see opponents.

The Strategies to Speed Up Call of Duty Map Creation

To speed up the process of map-making in Call of Duty, the team relies heavily on proprietary tools developed in-house. These tools are tailored specifically to the needs of the game and allow the team to work more efficiently than if they were using generic tools available online.

For each discipline within the team, there are specific tools that assist in their tasks, such as downloading textures or materials. However, the real efficiency comes from the ability to block out maps quickly using these proprietary tools.

Art directors start the process by working with concept artists to pull various assets from a large depot of pre-existing content. These assets, sometimes referred to as ‘kitbash’ assets, are either pulled directly from the depot or sourced online. However, to avoid legal issues and maintain originality, these assets are not used in the final concept. Instead, they serve as placeholders during the initial stages of map creation.

How Saun and His Team Overcome Production Pitfalls

Avoiding production pitfalls in map-making for Call of Duty mainly involves understanding the scope of each map. Initially, the team often aimed for highly customized and bespoke maps, but over time, they realized the need for a more streamlined approach, especially with the increasing number of maps required for downloadable content (DLC).

Shaun mentioned one key strategy to avoid pitfalls is being more organized and deliberate about the development process. This includes clearly defining when to move from blocking out a map to adding details. Early detailing can hinder designers from making changes, so it’s essential to be thorough during the blackout phase. He explained, “The minute we start to get into detailing, it’s harder for designers to then go through and make adjustments, so we really try to be more buttoned up so that artists are not redoing work constantly.”

“We used to use a lot of analytics to kind of adjust from time to time, and now we’re being more predictive, more prescriptive of what we’re trying to do,” Shaun continued.

Multiple playtests throughout the map development process are also crucial in avoiding pitfalls. These playtests help identify issues such as lines of sight and visual noise behind players, allowing the team to refine and deliver clarity.

In a Nutshell…

Creating maps for Call of Duty involves creativity, teamwork, and hard work. Shaun Bell, with over 20 years in the gaming industry, explains that it starts with understanding the game’s historical setting and using mood boards and style guides to keep everyone aligned. Designers and artists then collaborate to plan gameplay elements, using a three-lane strategy to guide players. We think it’s amazing how these steps come together to create such amazing maps. In 2024, Fortnite expanded their gaming experience with a series of exciting brand partnerships. And one of the most talked-about Fortnite collabs in 2024 is with Nike, a brand known for being one of the largest and best-recognized global sports and athleticwear brands.

To celebrate Air Max Day beyond the March 26 date this year, Nike launched a new project with Fortnite. Together with Devoted Studios, we created an amazing new gaming experience called Airphoria Vol.2.

Keep reading as we want to show you why we are so excited to be part of this Fortnite brand partnership project with Nike.

Nike Airphoria Vol.2: Entering the Dn Dimension

Our team at Devoted Studios played a great role in the development of Nike Airphoria Vol. 2, handling the project from the initial creative concept through to the final execution. Devoted Studios, working as UEFN developers, completed major tasks quickly, including creating two gameplay styles, four themes, and two islands, all while working within strict UEFN framework limits.

Highlights of Airphoria Vol.2

  • Bringing Ideas to Life: With Nike leading the way with their creative ideas, Devoted Studios worked together with them to bring those ideas to life.
  • 3D Modeling: We created detailed 3D models for props and environments, bringing the vibrant world of Airphoria to life.
  • Visual Effects: Advanced camera effects, visual effects (VFX), lighting, and optimization improve the game’s look and performance.
  • World-Building: We built a dynamic game environment with detailed world-building, set dressing, and level design.

The Development Journey for Nike Airphoria Vol. 2

Creating Nike Airphoria Vol. 2 was a challenging yet rewarding process. We aimed to replicate the success of Airphoria Vol. 1 with an all-new volume designed to show off Nike’s latest shoes. This new version features two islands, each with unique gameplay styles, offering players a diverse and engaging experience.

What Is the Development Process Like?

Our journey began with the goal of achieving a full UEFN experience within a tight timeframe. This required careful planning and efficient execution. As part of the Fortnite developer team, we focused on creating a seamless gaming environment, starting with the development of two distinct gameplay styles across two islands. Each island was carefully designed for a more unique experience, which contributes to the broader goals of Nike and Fortnite brand partnerships.

Feel the Unreal

One of the standout features of Nike Airphoria Vol. 2 is the “Feel the Unreal” experience. This journey begins with players starting the rail grinding experience from a point called “Internet Activated.” From there, players progress through “Air Max City,” an area filled with vibrant and dynamic elements designed to captivate and challenge.

As players advance, they reach the “Realm of the Airphorians” and encounter the Updraft Dash portal. This portal represents a significant milestone in the game, giving new challenges and opportunities for players. The journey continues as players move toward “Tilted Reality,” a place where they can further explore and immerse themselves in the game’s world.

Get to Know the Project Scope

Developing Nike Airphoria Vol. 2 was an ambitious and challenging journey. Nike led the way with their creative ideas, and we worked together to bring them to life. With the goal of this project that is to blend Nike’s iconic branding with Fortnite. Our team worked diligently through various stages, from initial creation to final publishing, to guarantee that every element of the game was thoughtfully designed, seamlessly integrated, and optimized for player’s experience.

Here’s an in-depth look at the comprehensive process we undertook to bring this innovative project to life.

Engineering

The engineering phase involved developing essential game mechanics and features. Key tasks included creating the central rail device, implementing checkpoints, designing a smooth respawn system, and developing diverse enemies and power ups. We also included an emoji collection to add fun and expressive communication options for players.

Art

The art team created and integrated 3D assets, environments, and lifelike animations. They enhanced the visual appeal with dynamic visual effects (VFX) and carefully integrated Nike’s branding to maintain authenticity within the game.

Game Design

The game design phase focused on core mechanics, creating power ups, developing level layouts, and designing hazards. We also created a difficulty curve based on client input to make sure that the game is challenging but at the same time does not feel like it is impossible to win.

To Publishing

The final step was publishing, which involved thorough testing to make sure all elements worked perfectly and any bugs were resolved. The game was then prepared for release, ready to launch to players.

Achievements and Wins

Despite tight deadlines and technical challenges, the collaboration between Nike, Devoted Studios, and Fortnite led to significant achievements:

  • Timely Publication: The islands were published without technical issues, keeping the project on schedule.
  • Positive Feedback: The project received praise for its creativity, execution, and overall impact.
  • Enhanced Exposure: Meeting Epic’s requirements ensured that the islands got maximum exposure, increasing player engagement and retention.

Challenges and Solutions

The development journey was not without its challenges. However, Devoted Studios implemented several solutions to overcome these obstacles:

  • Asset Management: Managing the large number of assets required for Airphoria Vol.2 was challenging. Devoted Studios reduced the asset count and consolidated sections to streamline the development process.
  • Optimization: Ensuring the game ran smoothly across different devices required significant optimization. Devoted Studios improved assets for faster updates and implemented solutions to fix server issues.
  • Collaboration: Devoted Studios maintained close communication with all stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful project delivery.

The Future of Fortnite Branded Experiences

The success of Airphoria Vol.2 showed the potential of Fortnite branded experiences. Looking forward to the rest of 2024, we expect more exciting collaborations to make the gaming experience even better.

Fortnite’s ability to blend brand partnerships into its game offers a unique way for brands to connect with a diverse and engaged audience. We believe there are many benefits to collaborating with Fortnite. The game’s success with Nike’s Airphoria Vol. 2, definitely has set the stage for future collaborations for many brands.

The Latest Unreal Engine and UEFN Updates!

watch 9 months

The world of game development is always growing, and the recent updates to Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) are no exception. UEFN, a PC-based creation tool, offers much more powerful creation capabilities, including importing your own assets and the ability to write your own code with Verse, a new programming language. The latest Unreal Engine and UEFN updates are part of the 30.10 patch, released in July 2024.

And with these updates, it will bring a host of new features and improvements that are set to change the way games are made and will bring some great benefits to all Fortnite developers.

We are sure that even if someone is just creating their first game, or if they are already working on a big game project, developers will find these Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite updates to be super helpful. And here are why these updates are exciting and cannot be waited for.

NPC Spawner Device Is Going to be a Game Changer

One of the most exciting additions to the Unreal Engine is the NPC Spawner Device. This tool allows Fortnite developers to have greater control and customization over non-playable characters (NPCs) in their games. As many know, NPCs are a significant part of a game for creating engaging and more dynamic worlds – they can serve as allies, enemies, or neutral characters that interact with the player in various ways.

With the NPC Spawner Device, Fortnite developers can now tailor these characters to fit their unique and creative visions. Additionally, as mentioned on the Fortnite Creator Portal, the NPC Spawner device does not replace existing devices such as the Guard Spawner, Wildlife Spawner, or Character device. Rather, it provides more control to define how AI-driven characters look and interact within their island.

There Is a New Experimental Feature Called ‘Scene Graph’

Scene Graph is now available to try in UEFN as an Experimental feature! This means developers can test it out while it’s still being developed. They can explore this early version of the Scene Graph feature, but they won’t be able to publish islands using scene graphs until its Early Access release.

This Experimental release gives developers the chance to learn a new core feature for UEFN that is important for the platform’s long-term goals. The goal is to give these exciting new tools to developers so they can provide valuable feedback on how to improve them before the final release.

Creative Tools Are Improved and Enhanced

In addition to the NPC Spawner Device, several other creative tools have received significant improvements. These enhancements are designed to make game development smoother and more efficient, allowing Fortnite studios to focus on what they do best: creating amazing games. These are the areas where creative tools are being enhanced in UEFN Fortnite updates:

  • Fixed an issue where the player could fall through the floor after exiting the Inflate-A-Bull.
  • Fixed an issue where the touch screen UI would not appear for many vehicles in Creative. This issue is known to persist for the Inflate-A-Bull.
  • Fixed an issue where the Legendary Tactical Assault Rifle had the wrong number of rarity stars in the Creative Inventory.

Character Device

The Character Device has been upgraded to offer more options and better control over player characters. This includes new customization features that let developers fine-tune the appearance and abilities of characters in their game, with the new weapon “Two Hook Cannon” added to the update.

Guard Spawner

The Guard Spawner has also seen improvements, making it simpler to place and manage guards in their game. Fortnite developers are able to spawn different types of Guards with customizable options. They will also be able to give a custom weapon for the Guard to use by simply dropping a Guard Weapon on the device.

Dance Mannequin

For those who love to add a touch of fun and wit to their games, the Dance Mannequin device has been enhanced as well. This device allows Fortnite developers to incorporate dance moves and animations into their game, adding an addition of entertainment and personality.

Third Person Controls

Finally, the Third Person Controls device has received updates to improve the overall player experience. These upgrades make it easier to create smooth and responsive third-person gameplay, ensuring that players have a great time navigating their game. With better controls, players can enjoy a more immersive and enjoyable experience.

There Will Be New Free Content on the Unreal Engine Marketplace

In addition to the new devices and tools, the Unreal Engine Marketplace has just released a fresh batch of free assets for July 2024. These resources are perfect for Fortnite developers looking to take their projects to the next level. The marketplace is a treasure trove of assets, including textures, models, animations, and more. With these new additions, they have even more options to enhance their game and make it stand out.

Using these free assets, any Fortnite developer can save time and effort on creating basic elements from scratch, which will allow them to focus on the unique aspects of their game. Whether they need a detailed environment, realistic character models, or intricate animations, the Unreal Engine Marketplace has them covered. These free resources are a fantastic way to boost their productivity and creativity.

These Updates Is Setting New Standards in Game Development

The recent Unreal Engine and UEFN updates are setting new standards in the world of game development. The enhanced creative tools, combined with the new NPC Spawner Device and free marketplace assets, provide fortnite studios with everything they need to create incredible experiences. These updates make the development process more efficient and accessible, empowering developers to bring their ideas to life in ways they never thought possible.

The gaming community is already buzzing with excitement over these new features. Fortnite developers are exploring the possibilities and coming up with innovative ways to use these tools in their games. From creating detailed and more extended worlds to adding unique character interactions, the potential is limitless.
